This Privacy Policy explains how IELTS Writing Task 1 (the "Service") collects, uses and protects personal information when you create an account, submit essays for marking, or buy access. It applies to everything we do at ielts-writing-task-1.com. The Service is run by Gavin Reid, sole trader, in the United Kingdom.
If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at hello@ielts-writing-task-1.com.
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run the Service:
- Account information — your email address, and, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile identifier Google shares with us. Authentication is handled by Supabase.
- Content you submit — essays, sentence rewrites and lesson responses, together with the feedback we generate for them. These are stored against your account so you can review your history.
- Payment metadata — if you subscribe or buy credits, Stripe processes the payment. We receive a Stripe customer identifier and a record that the transaction happened. We never see or store your card number.
- Cookies and session data — short-lived session and authentication cookies set by Supabase so you stay signed in. We do not use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
- Basic technical logs — server and edge logs (IP address, user-agent, request path) generated by Vercel for the purpose of running and securing the site.
How we use it
- To provide the lessons and AI-graded feedback you've signed up for.
- To manage your account, including the weekly free quota, credit balance, and subscription state.
- To take and refund payments through Stripe.
- To respond when you contact us.
- To detect and prevent abuse of the Service.
We do not sell your personal information to anyone. We do not use your essays to train any AI model.
Third parties that process your data
Running the Service requires a small number of third-party processors. We've chosen them deliberately and we list them here so you know who handles your data:
- Supabase — authentication and database (essays, attempts, feedback). Hosted in the EU. Privacy policy.
- OpenAI — when you ask for AI marking, the text of your essay and lesson responses is sent to OpenAI's API to produce the feedback you see. OpenAI's API terms commit to not training models on this content. Privacy policy.
- Stripe — all payments. We never receive your card details. Privacy policy.
- Vercel — hosting, edge logs, and email-based magic-link delivery. Privacy policy.
Some of these processors are based outside the UK/EEA (notably OpenAI in the United States). Where international transfers occur we rely on the recipient's Standard Contractual Clauses as the safeguard required by UK GDPR.
Lawful basis (UK GDPR)
- Contract — to deliver the lessons, marking and account features you've signed up for.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the Service secure and to prevent abuse.
- Consent — where you have given it (for example by signing in).
- Legal obligation — for tax, payment and statutory record-keeping.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct anything that is inaccurate.
- Delete your account and the personal data attached to it.
- Receive a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
To exercise any of these, email hello@ielts-writing-task-1.com. We will respond within one calendar month. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
How long we keep your data
Account data and essays are kept for as long as your account is active so you can review your history. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete the personal data attached to it within 30 days, except where we are legally required to keep transaction records (e.g. tax obligations on Stripe receipts).
Children
The Service is intended for users aged 16 and over. If you believe a child under 16 has created an account, please contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the "last updated" date at the top of the page. Material changes will also be flagged to active subscribers by email.
